At the end of the day, what’s life all about? After a recent (and far too close) brush with the Grim Reaper, provocateur filmmaker Gaspar Noé pondered the question. The result is Vortex, arguably his most radical and surprising work to date, which screened to acclaim at the last Cannes Festival. A deliberate, pitiless film about ageing, love and death, told in split-screen and dedicated to those who lose their minds before they lose their hearts. Of course, there’s only one way it can end . . . Françoise Lebrun (The Mother and the Whore), Dario Argento (Italy’s giallo master, here on the other side of the camera) and Alex Lutz (Guy) are together but alone, bound by love but divided by cinema, till Death do them part. – FNC
