Muzi, 22, returns to her hometown of Hangzhou. Her parents, now separated, have both moved on. She, in turn, hovers between past and present, flight and the eternal return. Zheng Lu Xinyuan’s debut feature reads like a stroll steeped in the New Wave sensibilities of Antonioni or Jarmusch. Lucidly beautiful, The Cloud in her Room blends its dazzling black-and-white photography, all half tones and subtle shifts of light, with an equally nuanced quest for identity.
