New monthly event at Cinéma Moderne – the Queer Cinema Club of Montreal (or QCCMTL for short): a vibrant celebration of queer stories and voices in cinema to create a space where all are welcomed and celebrated. For each edition, a new and exclusive poster will be created.

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) is our third choice for QCCMTL. We love it because it combines humor, heart, and a powerful message about self-acceptance and identity. Through its vibrant, satirical portrayal of a conversion camp and its absurd attempts to “cure” the campers, the film highlights the absurdity of trying to change one’s sexual orientation. With its campy aesthetic, all-star cast (Natasha Lyonne, Michelle Williams, Melanie Lynskey, RuPaul, Cathy Moriarty, Clea DuVall, Julie Delpy), sharp wit, and ultimately uplifting narrative, “But I’m a Cheerleader” celebrates queer love and resilience, making it an engaging and thought-provoking watch for any audience.
