Seven years after winning La Course destination monde, a Quebec TV filmmaking competition, Philippe Falardeau released his feature debut, the portrait of an unemployed engineer who allows his roommate to shoot a documentary about his job-seeking experience. With the biting humour he’s come to be known for, the filmmaker tackles subjects that were rare in Quebec cinema at the time, including economic dictatorship, cheap labour and the downsides of market globalization. This off-the-wall mockumentary full of lovable characters was the opening salvo of a filmmaker who, underneath his apparently light touch, applies his own personal take on major socioeconomic issues.
