Within the growing tradition of  “your favourite musician’s favourite musician you’ve probably never heard of” films, In My Own Time sits among the very best. Though she came up in the 1960s New York folk scene, Karen Dalton had a decidedly different path to the cafes of Greenwich Village, and her continued iconoclasm limited her output to two, albeit seminal records. With narration from Angel Olsen and a generous helping of adulation from Nick Cave, Peete and Yapkowitz construct an intimate portrait of an artist about whom little is known and even less has been saved. In the absence of any archival film and video footage, In My Own Time uses music, photographs, radio snippets, diary entries, and most importantly interviews with intimates and admirers to convey Dalton’s life, career, and struggles.
