“Ten miniature artefacts, industrial buildings models, dinosaur, train, atomic bomb: these childhood playthings turned historical artifacts form the basis of legendary filmmaker James Benning’s latest work. The film alternates between hands that patiently paint and assemble each model, and static images of the completed structures. Layered over these visuals is a sound collage of popular songs and political speeches drawn from different eras, weaving a subtle yet powerful narrative. Echoing his 1984 film American Dreams (Lost and Found), Benning, now 82, examines with a childlike gaze the complex legacies of the past—legacies that continue to shape America’s present and future. With minimal means and maximum insight, he crafts a contemplative, tactile reflection on memory, industry, and national identity.”
