Dis-moi

Chantal Akerman directed this documentary as part of a thematic series of TV films about grandmothers. Echoing the voice of her own mother who told her about her relationships with her own mother and grandmother, the filmmaker visits three elderly Jewish women and asks them to talk about their ancestors. Seated in their living rooms, filmed in fixed shots, these grandmothers recount their memories, the life of Jewish communities before the war, and the efforts to survive the horrors of the Holocaust. Les sénégalaises et la sénégauloise

Director Alice Diop was born in France to Senegalese parents. During a month spent in Senegal , equipped with a small camera, she films daily life. She portrays three women from her family: Néné and her two daughters Mouille and Mame Sarr. “(…) This courtyard is my mother’s courtyard, that of her childhood. This courtyard is where I could have been born. I am somewhat filming what my life could have been, I realize how close I was to being born on the “right side”. I can measure from here the transformation of exile , all that is lost by leaving, all that is gained.” (film-documentaire.fr)
