Kauaʻi ʻōʻō

Stemming from the only remaining sound artifact of a now extinct bird species, filmmaker Samy Benhamar invites us into a poetic dialogue with the last Kaua’i’ōʻō. In a somewhat delirious sensory exploration the camera rushed to transport us in between different territories, as far as the heavens, in search of traces from a being that no longer exists or is doomed to disappear…

A poetic film-essay on the colonial gaze and the magic lantern. Lantern projections were an effective way of selling the colonial project to a somewhat reluctant Belgian public.
