Once again this year, Cinéma Moderne invites you to discover the winning short films from the latest edition of the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma!

EN PAYS FROID (Hervé Demers, Québec, 16 minutes) – People’s Choice Award (National Competition)

Original French version with English Subtitles / Immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa choose to rebuild their lives north of the 49th parallel. In Eeyou Istchee Baie-James, they must learn to live in rhythm with a season previously unknown to them: winter.

PIQUE-NIQUE (Jérémy Gagnon, Québec, 9 minutes) – Grand Prize (National Competition)

Original French version with English Subtitles / Two welders observe an astral phenomenon during their lunch break. Faced with the sublime, they lower their masks.

THEIR EYES (Nicolas Gourault, France, 23 minutes) – Best Animation Prize (Les Nouveaux Alchimistes)

Original French and Spanish version with English Subtitles / How does a machine learn to read the world? Testimonies and screen recordings introduce the experience of online micro-workers from the Global South: their job is to teach the AI of self-driving cars to navigate the streets of the Global North.

DARIA’S NIGHT FLOWERS (Maryam Tafakory, Iran/UK/France, 16 minutes) – Dada National Prize (Les Nouveaux Alchimistes)

Original Farsi version with English Subtitles / Daria has written her first manuscript about falling in love with a mysterious girl called “abi” [blue]. The night flowers in her garden hide the secrets of a country that has turned love stories into routine crime scenes.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY (Dean Wei and Xu Yidan, China, 22 minutes) – Loup Argenté  (International Competition)

Original Mandarin version with English Subtitles / After a nighttime incident between a high school girl and boy, the boy’s mother is woken up and forced to solve their conundrum. The nature of the incident puts her role as mother in direct conflict with her role as a woman.
