When the Marquis d’Urfé, an emissary from the King of France, stops for the night at a remote Serbian mansion, he encounters a strange family awaiting the return of Gorcha, the father, who has gone on a mission against Turkish brigands. However, he has warned his family that if he returns after ten days, he would have become a ‘vourdalak,’ a sort of vampire… An adaptation of an obscure short story, The Family of the Vourdalak, written around 1840 by Alexei K. Tolstoy, this film portrays the vampire universe from an unexpected perspective.
