Itto, a young Moroccan from humble origins, has adapted to the opulence of her husband’s family with whom she lives. Just as she was looking forward to a day of tranquility without her in-laws, supernatural events suggesting the approach of a mysterious presence throw the country into a state of emergency. Alone, she struggles to find help. Visually hypnotic, Animalia, the debut feature film from the Franco-Moroccan director Sofia Alaoui, ingeniously explores the tension between faith and purpose by eroding myths and challenging class prejudices.
