Come and join us to discover the FNC 52th edition winners. You’ll drift from a phantom island in Spain to a reimagined lake in Siberia, from a surrealist satire on maternity to a delicate coming-of-age on consent and from a dark critic on women in video games to a touching and existential reflection in a Japanese public bath.

BLOOM | Helena Girón, Samuel M. Delgado | Spain | 2023 | 18 min | Original Spanish version with English | Dada international Award from the nouveaux alchimistes competition

San Borondón is a mysterious island that appears and disappears throughout history. Sometimes it can be found on a map near the Canary Islands, then it disappears. The legend of the island became so pervasive that many sought to conquer it, but never found it. With a look that is both scientific and surreal, underwater sequences transport us into the heart of the island, its legend and its mysticism.

BAIGAL NUUR – LAKE BAIKAL | Alisi Telengut | Germany, Canada | 2023 | 9 min | Original Mongolian version with English subtitles | Prix Dada national Award from the nouveaux alchimistes competition

The formation of Lake Baikal, the oldest and deepest lake on earth, is reimagined with the voice of the indigenous Buryat language. Using mixed materials found in Germany, the important connection between history, language and land is brought to life in this visually stunning animation.

MOTHERS & MONSTERS | Edith Jorisch | Canada (Quebec) | 2023 | 16 min | No dialogue | Audience Award from the national competition

At a lush banquet, women who are trying a little too hard await the arrival of unique beings. Under a layer of cabbage and sequins is a surrealist satire that deals with modern-day motherhood and the idea of the perfect family, at a time when capitalism reaches its limit.

ÉTÉ 2000 | Virginie Nolin, Laurence Olivier | Canada (Quebec) | 2023 | 20 min | Original French version with English subtitles | Grand prize from the national competition

9 year-old Sarah loves skateboarding and chilling out with her half-sister. As she quietly discovers love, an abusive event derails her sexual awakening. By playfully mixing different mediums, this intimate and delicate coming-of-age film offers an insight into gender performativity and consent.

ALIEN0089 | Valeria Hofmann  | Chile, Argentina | 2023 | 22 min | Original Spanish version with English subtitles | Best animation Award from the nouveaux alchimistes competition

As a female gamer uploads a video denouncing the harassment she suffers in a war video game, a stranger breaks into her home and hacks her computer, blurring the lines between the real and virtual worlds. A multi-layered experience reflecting today’s hyper-reality, the film mixes screen capture with first-person images and documentary footage.

OYU | Atsushi Hirai | France, Japan | 2023 | 21 min | Version originale japonaise avec sous-titres anglais | Loup argenté de la compétition internationale

It is the last day of the year and night is falling on the small town of Toyama, Japan. A man goes to the public baths to retrieve something he forgot and comes across an old but still-valid entry ticket. He lets himself be tempted and, among clouds of vapour, gestures and conversations around him, a simple bath becomes an invitation to existential reflection.
