Camil goes looking for his girlfriend, who’s disappeared after joining a commune of women who perform mysterious fertility rituals. Sensing that his traditional view of what it is to be a man is slipping through his fingers, his quest – punctuated with oddball encounters – will shake up his prejudices about masculinity and gender roles. In one of the most fearless efforts in recent Romanian cinema, Mammalia takes a surreal approach to identity crisis, blending dark humour, fixed shots and coolness of tone, as if Roy Andersson had joined forces with Michael Haneke. A genuinely strange, exhilarating trip.
