On the shores of a fjord on Iceland’s north coast, an abandoned building seems to have been overtaken by the elements. It is decrepit and vacant, but people regularly visit to indulge in various activities – some natural, some industrial, together forming a stunning ballet of the elements. In this first feature, Icelandic filmmaker Geir Bollason has made a film that’s part poetic escape and part experiment, in which contemplation and tension strike a harmonious balance. With very little dialogue, Mannvirki gives the viewer enough time to absorb humanity’s harmful impacts on nature, the better to appreciate their absurdity.
