Les nouveaux alchimistes section
Screening with filmmaker Felipe Esparza Perez in attendance
An elderly man in the Peruvian Andes chips away at a blindingly white piece of volcanic stone; his son creates a digital model of a church on his computer. Both stone and building are metaphors for Peru, its identity and its colonial past. Though the two men don’t really seem to connect, they’re nonetheless driven by the same ideals and reverence for beauty. Felipe Esparza Pérez’s extraordinary first feature, cinematic and contemplative, is nearly devoid of dialogue but acutely attuned to the slightest sound. Infinitely sensitive in its capture of details and textures, Cielo Abierto puts old and new side by side to show how the two mingle.
