Following a breakup, Finnish grad student Laura takes the train from Moscow to Murmansk to visit an archeological dig. On board, she’s forced to share a compartment with a surly, vodka-swilling Russian labourer. A kind of Before Sunrise with much more heightened realism, Finnish director Juho Kuosmanen’s second feature affectionately follows the unlikely meeting between two twenty-somethings from completely different backgrounds and their fleeting bond, forged by close quarters. Carried by the charismatic Seidi Haarla and Yuriy Borisov, the film is a gentle rite of passage where two strangers make brief contact despite themselves. – Text written for Festival du nouveau cinéma (FNC)
