Nearly 15 years ago, Roberto Bolaño’s epic apocalyptic novel, 2666, told the terrifying, surreal story of the countless murders of women in northern Mexico. In some ways, Soleils noirs is a documentary sequel. Not only because it opens in Ciudad Juárez, the Chilean novelist’s main inspiration, but above all because it shares Bolaño’s dark vision and ability to meld ambitious journalism with aesthetic fireworks. Presented in chapters, the film unfolds methodically through unsettling testimonials, sketching a portrait of an entire country transformed into a gigantic mass grave thanks to a climate of impunity established by both criminal gangs and state authorities.
