After a breakup, Frank Beauvais became a hermit in a village in Alsace, drowning his sorrows in movies. Out the 400 films he watched during this period came this magnificent montage film, a melancholy, tempestuous odyssey through the world of cinema. Narrated by a filmmaker searching for his bearings, a man consumed by spleen, the meanness of the world and memories of the past – a creator crushed by the weight of the many films by others. The hundreds of shots he uses, just a few seconds each, become like mirrors for self-examination. While not self-centred or devastating, this diary exposes the sensitive soul in all of us; it is a strangely luminous reflection. (RIDM)

This is a brisk, stimulating movie which concludes (correctly) that compulsive cinephilia is a rewarding parasite at the best of times. – Filmmaker magazine
