Constructed as a series of tableaux, this is the story of Sinan, a young graduate who goes back to his hometown in Anatolia. He finds himself tormented by the desire to write a novel, and has a series of interesting encounters. Sinan’s reunions, confrontations and conversations allow the Turkish filmmaker to build the film around dialogue, including a particularly memorable joust between Sinan and an established author, in a local bookstore. His fluid, austere, wonderfully poetic cinematic language on full display, Ceylan delivers a complex, melancholy portrait, and a deeply touching father-son story. (Frédéric Bouchard, FNC)
