It’s 1429. As she prepares to lead the battle of Paris, Joan of Arc has no inkling that she will mark history, be imprisoned by the Burgundians, stand trial in Rouen, be accused of witchcraft and burnt at the stake. After Jeanette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc, Bruno Dumont continues his adaptation of Charles Péguy’s play with a second instalment that’s more stripped-down, contemplative and visceral, where the unshakable conviction of the heroine (astonishingly played by the young Lise Leplat Prudhomme) and the delectably off-the-wall score by Christophe are equalled only by the absurdity and cruelty of Joan’s tragic destiny. (Festival du Nouveau Cinéma 2019)

Dumont teaches us how to experience this quite verbose film: attendant to song, glances, visual patterns, and the animated body above all else. – Cinema Scope
