cELLEuloid has the honor to present the latest feature film of Chinonye Chukwu, the first black woman to ever win Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize for her movie Clemency.

Clemency revolves around the rather hectic daily life of Bernadine Williams (played by Alfre Woodard). She works as a warden in a prison where overseeing the mechanics of the death penalty is just part of her of job. When she develops a friendship with the next man in line to be sentenced to death, it weakens her beliefs about her career.

Chuwuku stays far from the usual treatment of death penalty on screen ; portrayed with extreme realism and devoid of suspense, she is able to showcase a soft, progressive shift in the protagonist’s psychology anchored by Woodard’s exceptional performance.

Above all else, Clemency is a supreme actors’ showcase, backed by a director of fine-tuned emotional intelligence and a cinematographer who understands the depth and beauty of black skin tones – Vulture
